Mario Hezonja opens up on his NBA return and dramatic transformation
Mario Hezonja’s long road back
More than a decade after entering the NBA as the No. 5 overall pick, Mario Hezonja is heading back to the league and he’s not the same player who left at 20. After years starring in Europe — including a prominent stint with Real Madrid — Hezonja rebuilt his game, body and outlook before deciding the time was right to return to the United States.
Rather than rush back, he used his European years to grow. He focused on winning with his teams, chasing tougher goals and sharpening his skills across entire seasons, not just in summer workouts. That stretch helped him collect individual honors and, more importantly for him, reach milestones he felt were missing when he first departed for the NBA.
What he brings to Cleveland
Physically and stylistically Hezonja says he’s changed a lot. Where he once measured around 6’6″ and under 200 pounds, he’s now bulked up significantly and added length and strength — traits that expand how coaches can use him on both ends of the floor. But the bigger shift is mindset: he describes himself as a high-effort, versatile player who embraces whatever role helps the team win.
Joining a Cavaliers roster that already features established stars is something he views as an opportunity, not a problem. Hezonja points to the group’s chemistry and continuity as a big reason he wanted to sign on — a team that feels like a tight-knit unit and already knows how it wants to play. He expects to fit in, do the dirty work, and provide dependable minutes next to players like Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.
More than anything, Hezonja says his goal now is contribution over proving himself. He’s come back with experience, a stronger body, and a team-first mentality: play hard every night, be versatile, and give whatever the team needs to go further than it has before.
