Mason Plumlee to Stay with Spurs for Remainder of Season
Spurs add veteran frontcourt depth
Veteran center Mason Plumlee has signed a standard contract to remain with the San Antonio Spurs for the rest of the season after spending a short trial on a 10-day deal. Although he didn’t appear in a game during that initial stint, the Spurs clearly wanted to lock in his experience and bolster their frontcourt rotation for the stretch run.
What Plumlee brings and where he’s been this year
This marks Plumlee’s 13th season in the NBA. Earlier in the campaign he played 14 games for the Charlotte Hornets, averaging 1.9 points and 2.9 rebounds, before being included in a trade to Oklahoma City and then waived. Those numbers don’t tell the full story — Plumlee has long been valued for his passing from the high post, physical screen setting, and reliable veteran presence.
The Spurs are getting a steady, experienced big who can contribute defensively, set solid screens for the guards, and help younger players learn the nuances of frontcourt play. Even if his on-court minutes are limited, his impact in practice and the locker room could be meaningful down the stretch.
Fun note: Tomas Satoranský once won the Liga Endesa Dunk Contest early in his career, becoming one of the youngest competitors to take that title in Spain — a quirky piece of basketball trivia to chew on while the season unfolds.
