Trey Lyles returns to the NBA, signs with Timberwolves
After one season with Real Madrid, Canadian forward Trey Lyles is heading back to the NBA after agreeing to a one-year contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to reports from NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Lyles enjoyed a strong personal season in Spain, establishing himself as one of Real Madrid’s most reliable scoring options in his EuroLeague debut. He averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists across 42 appearances, though the club finished the year without any major trophies.
Why he left Real Madrid and what he brings to Minnesota
The 29-year-old had already built a lengthy NBA career before his stint overseas, appearing in roughly 650 games with the Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons and Sacramento Kings. Across that span he averaged about 7.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.
Real Madrid reportedly looked into renewing his contract, but they couldn’t reach terms. A number of EuroLeague teams showed interest, yet Lyles made returning to the NBA his priority this offseason. Joining Minnesota gives him a chance to add floor spacing and veteran frontcourt depth to a roster led by Anthony Edwards — and the one-year deal provides flexibility for both player and team.
