Baskonia signs A.J. Lawson to two-year deal after strong G League season

The deal and what to expect

Baskonia has added Canadian guard A.J. Lawson on a two-year contract, a move the club confirmed after reports in recent days. The 26-year-old arrives in Vitoria after several seasons split between the NBA and the G League, bringing proven scoring ability and athleticism to the backcourt.

Lawson should help inject pace and perimeter shooting into Baskonia’s rotation as the team continues to rebuild ahead of the new season.

What Lawson brings and recent roster changes

Lawson starred at South Carolina from 2018–2021 before entering the 2021 NBA Draft. Though he went undrafted, he carved out opportunities through strong G League play and brief NBA stints. His resume includes time with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors, and several G League stops such as the College Park Skyhawks, Iowa Wolves, Texas Legends, Long Island Nets and Raptors 905.

Last season he was named to the All-NBA G League Second Team and also appeared in 30 NBA games, averaging 3.7 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest. Those credentials underline why Baskonia sees him as a useful contributor.

This signing is the club’s third addition of the summer, following earlier deals for D.J. Stewart and Chris Duarte. At the same time Baskonia has said goodbye to a number of players, including Gytis Radzevicius, Eugene Omoruyi, Trent Forrest and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, while others have moved on to different destinations or are currently free agents.

With Lawson on board, Baskonia is steadily shaping a new-look squad aimed at returning to a higher level in both the EuroLeague and the Spanish league.
