Tristan Thompson Named Global Ambassador as Dubai Expands Its Basketball Project
Thompson’s new role and what it means
Former NBA champion Tristan Thompson has been announced as a global ambassador for Dubai’s basketball program. Best known for his 2016 title with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Thompson will help raise the club’s profile internationally and support efforts to grow basketball interest across the United Arab Emirates.
His role goes beyond photo ops: the club expects him to help build connections with players, agents and fans across Europe and the Middle East, and to lend practical insight from his years playing at the top level. Thompson has said he’s eager to back the project and help create an environment where players want to come and compete.
Big changes on and off the court
The appointment comes amid a busy offseason for the club. After winning its first regional league title last season, Dubai reshaped its staff and roster to take the next step. Xavi Pascual has been brought in as head coach, succeeding Aleksander Sekulic, and the team added several experienced players, including Jaron Blossomgame, Elie Okobo, Davion Mintz, Mamadi Diakite and Tornike Shengelia.
At the same time, some players have moved on or been loaned out. A few new signings were sent on loan to other clubs to gain playing time, while others from last season signed elsewhere. Management say these moves are all part of a longer-term plan to build a competitive, sustainable program that attracts talent and raises Dubai’s standing in international basketball.
With a new coach, a retooled roster and an NBA champion representing the club globally, Dubai are clearly pushing to be seen as more than a regional team — they’re aiming to be a genuine hub for basketball in the area.
