Sergio Scariolo Joins Roma SPQR as Special Advisor for Basketball Strategy
Veteran coach Sergio Scariolo has signed on with Roma SPQR in a strategic advisory capacity as the club prepares for its first season in Italy’s top division and a EuroCup campaign. He will bring his experience to the club’s sporting and technical plans while remaining focused on his coaching career.
Role and what he’ll do
Scariolo has been named Special Advisor for Basketball Strategy. He’ll work alongside the owners, management and basketball department to help shape long-term development, advise on technical strategy, and support the growth of young players. His input is intended to be consultative rather than hands-on: the day‑to‑day coaching duties stay with head coach Alessandro Magro and his staff.
Scariolo said he’s enthusiastic about contributing to a project that aims to build a wider basketball culture, not just a team. He described his role as offering experience and guidance on sustainable planning and player development, while continuing his own professional path as a coach.
The project, leadership and next steps
Roma SPQR was formed after acquiring Cremona’s sporting licence and will compete in Serie A and the EuroCup in its debut season. The venture is led by majority shareholder Donnie Nelson, with Valerio Bianchini named Honorary President and Senior Advisor and Roberto Carmenati handling operational management.
The club plans to expand its leadership group over time, adding experienced figures from Italian, European and American basketball through an Advisory Board that will be announced once choices are finalised. The roster and coaching staff will be revealed on Wednesday, ahead of the start of training camp.
Roma SPQR will gather at the Giulio Onesti Olympic Preparation Center in Rome on Thursday, August 20 to officially kick off preparations for the 2026–27 season.
