Willy Hernangómez presented at Unicaja — ready to fight alongside the team

Presentation and goals

Willy Hernangómez was officially unveiled as a new Unicaja player in Málaga. The Spanish national team captain said he’s excited about the new chapter, thanked club president Juanma Rodríguez and coach Txus Vidorreta for the chance, and emphasized he wants to give his all in every practice and game.

After returning from the NBA, Hernangómez spent three seasons at Barcelona but didn’t always find the same level he showed when he earned EuroBasket MVP in 2022. Joining Unicaja is a fresh opportunity for him to rediscover his best form, enjoy playing again and potentially push for a return to EuroLeague competition down the line.

Coach, role and motivation

A major factor in his decision was the chance to work with Txus Vidorreta, who recently took the Unicaja job after leaving Tenerife. Hernangómez praised Vidorreta’s track record for making teams competitive and helping players improve, and said he plans to be a sponge — listening, learning and following instructions to help the team.

Even with his experience as national team captain and time in the NBA, he wants to stay humble. He doesn’t feel the need to claim a leadership label; instead he described himself as another teammate ready to fight alongside everyone. The project’s ambition, the mix of new and experienced players, and the prospect of playing in the FIBA Champions League — a competition he hasn’t played in before — are all motivating factors.

Family conversations also helped tip the balance: his brother Juancho, who plays for Panathinaikos, encouraged him that the club, the city and the coach would be a great fit.
