Wizards GM: Alex Sarr expected ready for 2026/27 season

Washington’s young center Alex Sarr is on track to be available for the start of the 2026/27 season after undergoing surgery in June to fix a fractured right foot. General manager Will Dawkins said Sarr won’t be a full participant when training camp opens — he’ll begin as a partial participant while he finishes his rehab — but the expectation is that he’ll be ready when the regular season kicks off.
Last year the 21-year-old showed real promise, averaging 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists, while stretching the floor with a 33.3% mark from three. His second season was interrupted by a toe issue before the summer injury, so this recovery period is an important step toward getting him back to full form.
What to expect this season
Sarr is heading into his third NBA season in a roster that looks much different than the one he joined. The front office reshaped the team in the offseason, adding star talent and veteran depth around the young core. With those changes, expectations for both Sarr and the franchise are higher — the goal is no longer just development but competing for a playoff spot.
When healthy, Sarr gives the Wizards size, rim protection and an inside scoring option that complements the team’s new perimeter playmakers. The club will likely manage his minutes early on to ensure he comes back strong and stays available over the long haul. If the rehab goes according to plan, look for him to play a meaningful role once the season gets rolling.
