Clippers Name John Gibson Interim Governor and CEO During Ballmer Suspension

The Los Angeles Clippers have tapped local attorney John Gibson to serve as interim Governor and CEO while owner Steve Ballmer is sidelined for a year by the NBA. Ballmer nominated Gibson, and the league has approved the appointment. Gibson will handle the franchise’s top leadership duties during Ballmer’s absence as the organization works through the fallout from the league’s investigation.
The suspension stems from the NBA’s conclusion that the team violated salary-cap rules in a matter connected to Kawhi Leonard. With Ballmer temporarily barred from team and league activities, the Clippers needed someone who could step in quickly and provide steady, experienced leadership.
Gibson’s background and immediate priorities
Gibson is a longtime Clippers season-ticket holder and a veteran trial lawyer. Before taking this role he was a litigation partner in Los Angeles, representing corporations, technology and healthcare firms, professional sports organizations and business leaders over more than three decades. He also served as lead trial counsel for the Clippers in litigation tied to Ballmer’s purchase of the team.
A graduate of Harvard and the University of Michigan Law School, Gibson said he was honored to take on the role and stressed his long-standing ties to the organization. His immediate job is practical: bring stability to the front office, keep day-to-day operations running smoothly, and coordinate with staff as the franchise implements the league’s penalties.
The NBA also disciplined other club officials: the president of business operations received a one-year suspension, the president of basketball operations was suspended for six months, and Kawhi Leonard was fined $700,000. The team was fined $30 million and must forfeit five first-round draft picks from 2029 through 2033. The franchise has stated it will comply with the sanctions as it moves forward.
With Gibson in place, the Clippers aim to steady the organization and focus on the season ahead while the leadership changes take effect. Fans and league observers will be watching to see how the interim regime manages both the basketball and business sides of the club.
