Monaco given final deadline to secure LNB Pro A future amid €24 million debt

The French Basketball Federation has pushed its appeal ruling back to July 27, handing AS Monaco a last window to prove it can meet the financial requirements to play in the LNB Pro A for 2026–27. The club’s registration was originally rejected by the DNCCG, the sport’s financial watchdog, which flagged doubts about the project’s long-term stability.
Monaco has been asked to supply extra financial guarantees tied to a proposed takeover. The club’s lawyer, Me Le Cerf, said the extra time is a positive development, but the July 27 deadline is widely seen as make-or-break — failure to satisfy the authorities could lead to exclusion from the top division next season.
Debt, takeover and what’s next
Reports say the company that runs Monaco’s professional basketball team has amassed about €24 million in debt. That total reportedly includes roughly €8 million in outstanding liabilities and around €16 million advanced so far this year by the national development fund of the principality.
A takeover plan from Helen Holdings, led by former NBA player Jamal Mashburn, reportedly envisages about €10 million in new funding. The DNCCG has previously judged that amount insufficient to cover Monaco’s obligations without further guarantees.
The federation’s appeal decision comes just days before the club is due to appear in Monaco’s courts on July 31 over its finances, so the end of July will be a busy period for the Roca Team. A successful takeover and stronger financial assurances would improve Monaco’s chances of staying in the Pro A, while any shortfall could put the club’s professional future in serious jeopardy.
The outcome also affects other clubs: teams like Saint-Quentin and Fos Provence Basket are waiting to see which leagues they will be placed in for 2026–27 depending on Monaco’s final status.
