New York Knicks vs Cleveland Cavaliers Game 2 – Preview & Prediction (May 21, 2026)

Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals is set for May 21, and the Knicks head into it riding the momentum of an almost impossible comeback in Game 1. New York erased a 22-point deficit late and won in overtime, leaving the series tied and both teams with plenty to think about before Friday’s tip-off.

Game 1 recap: dramatic Knicks rally

New York looked flat for most of Game 1, especially through the first 40 minutes, but they found a way to turn things around. The Cavs had control late in the fourth, yet an 18–1 run from the Knicks forced overtime. Jalen Brunson led the charge with a huge scoring night, and Landry Shamet hit the big tying three that forced extra time. Once overtime started the Knicks opened aggressively and built a lead that Cleveland couldn’t overcome.

Earlier in the playoffs the Knicks had looked nearly unstoppable, piling up big wins and getting extra rest thanks to a relatively smooth path. That dominance faded in Game 1, though, and the team’s offensive rhythm disappeared at times — especially from distance. Still, the comeback showed the Knicks’ resilience and gave them a huge emotional lift heading into Game 2.

Cavaliers’ outlook and key concerns

The Cavs will be left scratching their heads after blowing a big lead. They’ve had a tougher road to the conference finals, with multiple seven-game series that likely cost them energy and minutes. For long stretches of Game 1 they executed well, moved the ball, and got contributions across the roster, but the late collapse raises questions about fatigue and focus down the stretch.

Defensively, Cleveland had some trouble containing Brunson and the Knicks’ late attack. James Harden’s defense drew criticism after the loss, and the coaching staff will need to find cleaner ways to hide mismatches without losing his scoring impact. Donovan Mitchell played well overall but showed some limping after the game; the team will monitor that as they prep for Game 2. Evan Mobley and others had solid nights, but the Cavs must close out games better if they want to avoid another comeback.

Prediction

Tip-off: Thursday, 8:00 p.m. ET, May 21. Expect a much tighter, more focused Knicks performance — home crowd energy and the confidence from the comeback should push them to play with more intensity from the opening whistle. The Cavs remain a real threat, but fatigue and the psychological sting of losing a big lead could make a difference.

Pick: New York by about 4–6 points. I’m leaning Knicks to cover a small spread and take Game 2 at Madison Square Garden.
