Ataman gives timeline for Richaun Holmes after knee injury

Coach’s update after the Maccabi Tel Aviv game

Panathinaikos picked up a 99–85 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv, but the result was dampened by an injury to starting center Richaun Holmes. He left the game with what looks like a serious knee issue and was taken for further tests.

Coach Ergin Ataman said the medical team warned it appears to be a significant knee problem and that an MRI will be needed to determine the full extent. The earliest estimate he was given is about one month out, though everyone is hoping it won’t be worse. “They told me that it’s a serious knee injury, but how serious it actually is, they need to analyze it better with an MRI. But the minimum they told me is one month. I hope that it will not be more serious than that. We’ll see the next day,” Ataman said.

What this means moving forward

Holmes arrived this summer from the NBA and quickly became an important part of the rotation, so his absence would be a notable setback. The team will likely need other bigs to step up on both ends of the floor while the medical staff completes evaluations and outlines a recovery plan.

For now, the timeline depends on the MRI and subsequent assessments. Fans and teammates will be watching for updates in the coming days as the club shares more detailed information about Holmes’ condition and expected return.
