Tornike Shengelia leaves Barcelona to join Dubai after paying release clause
Tornike Shengelia has ended his one-season stint with Barcelona after making his release clause payment — reportedly close to €1 million — and will join Dubai ahead of the 2026–27 season. Barcelona confirmed the forward’s departure after the veteran activated his exit option.
Strong season in Spain
The 34-year-old Georgian was one of Barcelona’s steadier performers in 2025–26. He played a full EuroLeague slate, appearing in 34 games and averaging 12.4 points and 4.6 rebounds. In domestic competition he featured in 40 games and chipped in about 11.2 points per contest, helping the team reach the Spanish League finals.
Shengelia brings a long résumé: successful spells at Virtus Bologna, CSKA Moscow, Baskonia, Valencia and Charleroi, plus NBA experience with the Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets. Even after a solid individual season, he chose to move on and take the new opportunity.
Dubai’s roster overhaul
Dubai have been active this offseason, adding several proven EuroLeague players as they try to accelerate their project. Recent signings include Jaron Blossomgame and Elie Okobo, as well as Mamadi Diakite and Davion Mintz. The club has also moved players on loan as part of its squad planning.
Leadership changes came too: Dubai appointed former Barcelona coach Xavi Pascual to steer the program. At the same time the squad trimmed its roster, letting go of players such as Nate Mason, Bruno Caboclo, Matt Ryan, Taran Armstrong and Boogie Ellis, while arranging loans for others.
Bringing in Shengelia adds another experienced, versatile piece to a team that’s clearly trying to assert itself among Europe’s top clubs next season.
