How Barcelona Raised €3M This Summer Through Buyouts
Major departures and a changing roster
Barcelona went through a hectic offseason with a number of key players and staff moving on. Cornerstones like Tornike Shengelia and Will Clyburn left, along with rotation contributors such as Willy Hernangómez, Jan Veselý and Tomáš Satoranský. Longtime head coach Xavi Pascual also departed, leaving the team with a much different look heading into the 2026/27 campaign.
Where the money came from
According to reports, the club collected roughly €3 million in buyout-related income over the summer. A large portion came from Tornike Shengelia, who paid his buyout to facilitate a move to Dubai; the coach who left the club reportedly paid a buyout as well to join that same project.
Some revenue arrived from situations that were a little unusual. Moses Wright, who was briefly linked to Barcelona but never actually played for the team, left after Milano activated his release clause, which generated a payment for Barcelona.
Barcelona also saw returns from youth and developmental moves. Talents like Nikola Kusturica and Sayon Keita opted to continue their careers in the NCAA, producing part of the haul, and the club collected outstanding buyout installments from players already in the NCAA who still owed portions of their agreements.
One notable exit that didn’t bring in cash was Argentine point guard Juani Marcos, who moved to Murcia without a fee. Overall, the combination of buyouts and release clauses helped the club ease budget pressure and create some financial flexibility for the season ahead.
