Monaco’s basketball club plunged into trouble last season after a serious financial crisis. Even though they still won the LNB Pro A title, their license to play in the coming season was at one point refused, leaving the club’s future up in the air.
This week brought a sliver of hope: the appeals chamber gave the club an extra seven days to supply additional documents proving a takeover plan is viable. The group led by former NBA All-Star Jamal Mashburn has been the most prominent bidder; after an earlier rejection from the financial watchdog, sources now say the takeover appears to be moving forward and other potential buyers have stepped aside.
There’s also an urgent court date to watch — Monaco must appear before the district court before the end of the month to avoid formal insolvency procedures. The club’s debts are estimated at around €24 million by the administrator handling the case, which makes the next few weeks absolutely decisive.
Two paths ahead — rescue or collapse
At this point there are two clear outcomes. In the better scenario, the takeover goes through: Monaco stays in the LNB Pro A, secures a place in the EuroCup next season, and begins a difficult stabilization and rebuild under new ownership. That would preserve the club’s top-flight status, but it won’t come easy.
Most of the team’s top players have already left — names like Mike James, Alpha Diallo, Elie Okobo, Jaron Blossomgame and Matthew Strazel are among those gone — so any surviving club would need to assemble a new roster quickly. With many quality free agents already snapped up elsewhere, the incoming owners face a steep and costly task to put together a competitive side.
The alternative is bleaker: if the takeover fails or the court moves toward insolvency, Monaco could be relegated to a lower, uncertain division and effectively lose its high-level basketball project for the foreseeable future. That outcome would be a major setback for the club and its supporters.
Whichever way this goes, the coming days will be decisive. A successful rescue would mark the start of a hard rebuild; failure would likely mean a dramatic fall from the elite ranks of French basketball.
