Lonnie Walker’s return to Denver comes with a big catch
What the deal actually is
Lonnie Walker is back in the NBA picture after two seasons in Europe, but his spot with the Denver Nuggets isn’t locked down. He signed an Exhibit 9 training-camp deal and will join the team for camp this fall. That means he’ll fight for a roster spot — and only if he makes the cut would the contract convert to a one-year veteran minimum deal.
The move gives Walker a clear path back to the league, but it’s a low-risk arrangement for Denver: the team still has a couple of open roster spots and will evaluate him alongside other contenders during camp.
What he brings and why Denver might take a chance
Walker arrives in Denver on the strength of a productive season overseas. He averaged about 15 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in the EuroLeague, proving he can score and adapt to different styles of play. Before his stint abroad he had NBA experience with the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers, and he also played in Europe for Zalgiris.
For the Nuggets, Walker is depth and potential scoring off the wing. If he can show consistency and fit defensively, he could earn meaningful minutes alongside the core — including Nikola Jokic — or carve out a role as a bench scorer. For Walker, training camp is an audition: it’s a chance to re-establish himself in the NBA and secure a standard contract for the season.
