NBA legend Rick Adelman dies at 79

Rick Adelman, a Hall of Famer and one of the NBA’s most respected coaches, has died at 79. He leaves behind a long legacy of smart, team-first basketball and generations of players and fans who remember his calm presence on the sidelines.

Career highlights

Adelman spent decades coaching at the highest level, leading teams including the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves. With Portland — led on the floor by Clyde Drexler — he reached the NBA Finals twice, falling to the Detroit Pistons in one series and to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in another.

He’s especially remembered for his run in Sacramento, where a roster featuring Vlade Divac, Peja Stojakovic, Chris Webber and Mike Bibby produced some of the franchise’s most exciting basketball. The peak came in the 2002 Western Conference Finals, a seven-game battle with the Los Angeles Lakers that remains a defining moment for that Kings era.

Across his head-coaching career Adelman won 1,042 games, placing him among the top ten winningest coaches in NBA history. That longevity and consistency put him in elite company alongside coaches like Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich, Jerry Sloan and George Karl.

He also guided Houston through a remarkable stretch, helping the team make a deep conference run even while dealing with long absences from star players. One of the notable feats under his watch was a long regular-season winning streak that stood among the best in league history.

The organization in Sacramento released a statement expressing deep sadness, praising Adelman’s leadership, character and the way his teams captured the imagination of the city and its fans.

From player to coach

Before coaching, Adelman was a point guard in the league for six years, playing for several teams. His route into coaching wasn’t instant — he began at the junior-college level and was discovered by Jack Ramsay, who brought him into the NBA coaching ranks as an assistant. After several seasons learning under Ramsay and later Mike Schuler, he earned the chance to run an NBA team full-time and went on to build a remarkable coaching résumé.

Beyond the wins and playoff runs, Adelman is remembered for his steady leadership, his emphasis on teamwork and ball movement, and the lasting relationships he formed across the league. His influence will be felt for years to come.
