Monaco takeover talks with American investors reach final stage
Buyout talks move forward as the club chips away at debts
AS Monaco appear to be getting closer to a resolution after weeks of uncertainty. Negotiations with a group of American investors are reportedly in their final stage, offering hope that the club can land a long-term solution and steady the ship.
Recently the club has begun settling some overdue bills, including payments to service providers and agencies that had been waiting for months. That action, while not erasing the problems, has helped ease immediate pressure and given a bit more breathing room.
On the books, Monaco’s liabilities are said to be roughly €8 million. Since March, a national financing body stepped in with about €16 million to help keep the season on track, and the repayment timetable for some of that support has reportedly been pushed back until July 31. Those moves buy time as the takeover talks continue.
Deadlines ahead and what could change
The proposed takeover is reportedly being led by former NBA All-Star Jamal Mashburn and is thought to be in the region of €10 million. That offer was initially turned down by the French basketball financial watchdog, but talks have advanced and the club remains hopeful an agreement can be reached soon.
If the sale is completed next week, the incoming ownership group would face a tight calendar: an appeal to the French Basketball Federation is due around July 20, and a court hearing tied to the club’s finances is scheduled for July 31. Those dates will be crucial to avoiding further penalties or complications.
Monaco has already dropped from the EuroLeague to the EuroCup because of its financial situation, and the roster is expected to change significantly when roster moves take effect. Still, with potential new owners and recent debt repayments, there’s cautious optimism that the club can steady itself and keep pursuing its ambitions.
For now, fans and staff are watching the final stages of negotiations closely — hoping the deal brings the stability needed to move forward.
